What is a Battle Back Plate?
Football is a physical game at every level. With each collision comes the potential for injury, which makes properly fitted equipment an important part of getting ready for the field. A back plate adds coverage to the lower back.

A Battle football back plate attaches to compatible shoulder pads and provides additional padding over the lower back. For quarterbacks, running backs, wide receivers, and other players, that extra coverage can be a useful part of their equipment setup.
The key is installing the back plate correctly and checking the fit with your shoulder pads. Equipment cannot eliminate the risk of injury, and compatibility and mounting instructions can vary by model.
How to Install a Battle Back Plate

Installing a back plate is usually a quick process. Before you begin, confirm that your shoulder pads have compatible attachment points and follow the instructions supplied with your back plate and pads.
-
Remove the Back Plate and Hardware
Take the back plate and accompanying hardware out of the package. The hardware should include the nuts and screws used to connect the back plate to the shoulder pads. Keep everything together so you don’t lose any pieces.
-
Place the Nuts Between the Padding and the Shell
For shoulder pads that use this mounting arrangement, locate the back plate attachment holes in the hard outer shell. Place one supplied nut behind each hole, between the padding and the shell, and align it with the opening. Guide the nuts with your fingers as needed.
-
Attach the Back Plate
Align the back plate straps with the attachment holes. Insert the screws through the straps and shell, then thread them into the nuts by hand. Start both screws before tightening so you can check that the back plate sits evenly. Do not force a screw if it doesn’t thread smoothly.
-
Tighten with a Screwdriver
Use a screwdriver to secure the hardware according to the supplied instructions. Avoid overtightening. Check that the attachment is secure and that the back plate can move as intended without coming loose.
Put on the shoulder pads and check the back plate’s position and comfort. Recheck the hardware before use, and ask your coach or equipment manager for help if the fit or attachment is unclear.
Complete Your Football Equipment Setup

A back plate is one part of your setup. Check the fit, condition, and compatibility of the rest of your equipment before heading onto the field.
Chin Straps
A properly fitted chin strap helps keep the helmet secure. Follow the helmet manufacturer’s fitting instructions and confirm that the strap is compatible with your helmet.
Mouthguards
Football mouthguards help protect the teeth and mouth during play. Choose a mouthguard that fits comfortably and follow the instructions for the model. Do not rely on a mouthguard to prevent concussions.
Cleat Sleeves
Cleat sleeves and spats cover the cleat and ankle area and can help keep laces contained. Check the product’s intended use rather than assuming a sleeve will prevent ankle injuries or provide the same support as a brace.
