Sizing Guide & Size Charts
Every piece of Battle gear is sized by the measurement that actually governs its fit, which means the size you wear in one category will not always be the size you wear in another. Find your category below, measure once, and buy the size that fits now.
Football Glove Size Chart
How to measure. Measure two things. A is the length from the bottom of your palm to the tip of your middle finger. B is the circumference around your palm, measured just below the knuckles with the thumb excluded.
| Size | A: palm to fingertip | B: around palm |
|---|---|---|
| Small | 7 – 7.25" | 7.75 – 8.25" |
| Medium | 7.25 – 7.5" | 8.25 – 8.5" |
| Large | 7.5 – 7.75" | 8.5 – 8.75" |
| X-Large | 7.75 – 8" | 8.75 – 9" |
| 2X-Large | 8 – 8.25" | 9 – 9.5" |
| 3X-Large | 8.25 – 8.5" | 9.5 – 9.75" |
| Size | Typical age | A: palm to fingertip | B: around palm |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small | 5–6 | 6 – 6.25" | 7 – 7.5" |
| Medium | 7–8 | 6.25 – 6.5" | 7.5 – 7.75" |
| Large | 9–10 | 6.5 – 6.75" | 7.75 – 8" |
| X-Large | 10–11 | 6.75 – 7" | 8 – 8.25" |
Between sizes? If your two measurements point to different sizes, go with the size indicated by measurement B, the circumference around your palm. Fit across the palm has more effect on grip contact than finger length. If you are between an adult and a youth size, choose the adult size.
Football Cleat Size Chart
AstroFly and AstroLite use standard men's sizing. AstroJet is a youth cleat and uses US youth sizing.
How to measure.
- Tape a sheet of paper to a hard floor.
- Stand on it with your weight evenly distributed.
- Mark your heel and your longest toe, then measure between the marks.
- Do both feet and use the larger number.

Fit. Battle cleats fit snug by design, tighter than a casual sneaker. Your heel should stay locked in through cuts, and your toes should not feel compressed. If you are between sizes, or you wear thick game socks, size up by half a size. Women's sizing converts by adding 1.5 to the men's size, so a men's 6.5 is a women's 8.
Football Shoulder Pad Size Chart
How to measure. Shoulder pads are sized by the distance across your back from one AC joint to the other. The AC joint is where the shoulder meets the collarbone, sitting just above the armpit. Have someone measure straight across your back between those two points while you stand relaxed. Size by that measurement, not by age.
| Size | AC to AC |
|---|---|
| Youth Small | 13 – 14" |
| Youth Medium | 14 – 15" |
| Youth Large | 15 – 16" |
| Youth X-Large | 16 – 17" |
| Adult Small | 17 – 18" |
| Adult Medium | 18 – 19" |
| Adult Large | 19 – 20" |
| Adult X-Large | 20 – 21" |
Battle makes two shoulder pads. Phantom is the entry-level youth pad, built for newer and developing players. Defender is the lightweight performance pad for experienced athletes and faster, more physical play. The two use different size runs and are not interchangeable. A player who wears a Phantom Youth Large does not automatically wear a Defender Youth Large.
Where a measurement falls on the boundary between two sizes, read the ranges as running up to but not including the next number, so a 15 inch measurement is a Youth Medium rather than a Youth Large. Smaller, faster athletes usually prefer the smaller size and bigger, stronger athletes usually prefer the larger one. Most players want a snug fit rather than room to grow.
Reference athletes by size
Battle photographs each shoulder pad size on a real athlete. These are single reference points, not fit ranges. Size by your AC to AC measurement first, then use these to sanity check the result.
| Size | Age | Height | Weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| Youth Small | 6 | 4'5" | 65 lb |
| Youth Medium | 8 | 4'10" | 85 lb |
| Youth Large | 10 | 5'0" | 105 lb |
| Youth X-Large | 12 | 5'8" | 135 lb |
| Adult Small | 13 | 5'10" | 165 lb |
| Adult Medium | 14 | 6'0" | 220 lb |
| Adult Large | 15 | 6'1" | 240 lb |
| Adult X-Large | 16 | 6'2" | 270 lb |
| Size | Age | Height | Weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| Youth X-Small | 7 | 4'2" | 60 lb |
| Youth Small | 8 | 4'7" | 70 lb |
| Youth Medium | 9 | 4'10" | 82 lb |
| Youth Large | 10 | 5'0" | 105 lb |
Phantom is a youth-only pad and starts one size below Defender at Youth X-Small. Comparing the two tables shows why the sizes do not map across: a Phantom Youth Small is built for an 8-year-old at 4'7", while a Defender Youth Small is built for a 6-year-old at 4'5".
Football Back Plate Size Chart
| Size | Plate width | Plate height | Player height | Player weight |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Youth | 9.5" | 5.75" | Under 5'4" | 100 lb or less |
| Adult | 11.5" | 6.5" | Over 5'4" | More than 100 lb |
Choose the adult size if you meet the height guideline even if you are under the weight guideline, since coverage is set by the dimensions of the plate. Choose the adult size if you are mid growth spurt. Choose the youth size if you have a smaller frame or you have finished growing. Every Battle back plate ships with universal-fit mounting hardware and attaches through the lower slots on your shoulder pads.
Shop back platesFootball Sleeve Size Chart
Sleeves are sized by the circumference of your arm, and where you measure depends on which sleeve you are buying. Full arm sleeves are sized at the bicep. Forearm sleeves are sized at the forearm.
| Size | Bicep circumference |
|---|---|
| Youth S/M | 6 – 8.5" |
| Youth L/XL | 8.5 – 10" |
| Adult S/M | 10 – 12.5" |
| Adult L/XL | 12.5" and up |
Measuring your bicep. Let your arms hang relaxed without flexing, then measure the largest circumference around your upper arm.
| Size | Forearm circumference |
|---|---|
| Youth S/M | 4 – 6" |
| Youth L/XL | 6 – 8" |
| Adult S/M | 8 – 11" |
| Adult L/XL | 11" and up |
Measuring your forearm. Flex your arm slightly and measure the fullest part, usually about midway between your wrist and your elbow.
Between sizes? Size up for comfort or size down for compression.
Football Apparel Size Chart
Apparel is measured flat across the garment, not around the body. Chest width is measured across the chest one inch below the armhole and then doubled for full circumference. Body length runs from the highest point of the shoulder to the hem. Measurements can vary by about half an inch.

Hoodies and sweatshirts
Battle hoodies are cut differently from style to style, so a Large in one is not a Large in another. The table below gives the range every current style falls within at each size. Exact measurements for the hoodie you are buying are listed on that product's page under Size & Fit.
| Size | Body length | Chest width |
|---|---|---|
| Youth Small | 18.5 – 21" | 15.5 – 17" |

| Adult 4X-Large | 31.5 – 34" | 28 – 30.25" |
At Adult Large, the narrowest Battle hoodie is 21.5 inches across the chest and the widest is 25, a difference of 7 inches in full circumference. If you already own one Battle hoodie, check the product page before assuming your size carries over. Adult 4X-Large is offered on selected styles only.

Pants and joggers
Battle pants do not all share one set of measurements. There are three grades across the line, each covering more than one style, so find the chart that lists the pant you are buying. All measurements are taken with the garment laid flat.

Shop apparelYouth vs Adult Sizing Across Battle Gear
Battle does not use one youth-to-adult cutoff across the catalog, because each piece of gear is sized by whatever measurement actually governs its fit. A player can be a youth size in one category and an adult size in another at the same time. This is normal. Size each item on its own measurement rather than assuming a player is a youth or an adult across the board.
| Category | Sized by | Youth to adult crossover |
|---|---|---|
| Gloves | Hand length and palm circumference | Around 7" palm to fingertip |
| Cleats | Foot length | US youth 6Y equals US men's 6 |
| Shoulder pads | AC to AC width | 17" AC to AC |
| Back plates | Player height and weight | 5'4" and 100 lb |
| Sleeves | Bicep or forearm circumference | 10" bicep, 8" forearm |
| Apparel | Chest width and body length | Youth Large runs smaller than Adult Small |
A worked example. A 12-year-old at 5'8" and 135 pounds takes a Youth X-Large in Defender shoulder pads, but is over both the height and weight guidelines for a youth back plate and needs the adult size. Buying a full youth kit for that player would leave them in a back plate that does not cover their lower back.
Sizing FAQ
How do I know what size football gloves to get?
Measure your hand two ways: from the bottom of your palm to the tip of your middle finger, and around your palm just below the knuckles with the thumb excluded. Match both to the glove size chart. If the two measurements point to different sizes, go with the one from the palm circumference, since fit across the palm affects grip contact more than finger length.
Do Battle cleats run true to size?
Battle cleats fit snug by design, tighter than a casual sneaker. Order your normal athletic shoe size unless you are between sizes or plan to wear thick game socks, in which case go up half a size. Your heel should stay locked in through cuts and your toes should not feel compressed.
What size shoulder pads does my child need?
Measure across the back from one AC joint to the other and match that number to the chart. The AC joints sit where the shoulder meets the collarbone, just above the armpit. Size by the measurement rather than by age. Phantom and Defender use different size runs, so a player who wears a Phantom Youth Large will not necessarily wear a Defender Youth Large.
What size back plate do I need?
Battle back plates come in youth and adult. Youth fits players under 5 foot 4 who weigh 100 pounds or less. Adult fits players over 5 foot 4 or more than 100 pounds. Choose adult if you meet the height guideline even if you are under the weight guideline, since coverage is set by the dimensions of the plate.
Should I buy youth gear a size up so my player can grow into it?
No. Protective gear only works when it sits where it is supposed to. Shoulder pads that shift, a back plate that hangs low, or gloves that bunch at the fingertips all reduce protection and grip. Buy the size that fits now.
My player is a youth size in one category and an adult size in another. Is that normal?
Yes. Battle sizes each piece of gear by whatever measurement governs its fit, so the youth-to-adult crossover lands in a different place for each category. A 12-year-old at 5 foot 8 and 135 pounds takes a Youth X-Large in Defender shoulder pads but needs an adult back plate.
